“My success story is really a series of several recent exchanges. I was able to get a quick tutorial using Skype within a day of posting my request and I Skyped for the first time ever that very evening. I was able to locate assistance for a student of mine using voice-activated writing technology--now was this not fabulous? Most recently I asked for help with my French in preparation for a trip. I got an immediate response and will be setting up our first session. Now think about it: how time consuming that could have been! An ad in the newspaper? Costs? So much effort! Time Traders, you are marvelous and I am impressed with the wealth and diversity of skills we have to offer.” - a Brattleboro Time Trade member, Vermont http://ow.ly/KkEd30akuFh . #timebankingis #community #50storiesin50days #timebanks #story #timeasmoney #communication
Reflection by Edgar Cahn
Life is more than a spectator sport. And we are more than consumers. There is something special about a TimeBank exchange. We are not simply consumers. We are actively providing a way of enabling and empowering another person to know that they matter, to know that they can make a difference in the life of another.
There is a universal need to feel that one’s life has meaning. Simple consumption does not do that. But receiving help from another in a TimeBank exchange represents the creation of meaning, of purpose, jointly shared. One is giving new life to a movement. When a transaction becomes a relationship and the relationship becomes a web of connectivity and the web of connectivity renews an entire ecosystem for our species, a simple act is more than a simple act. It supplies the molecular structure of purpose – and ultimately, that is what spirituality means.
