Reflection by Edgar Cahn
Life is more than a spectator sport. And we are more than consumers. There is something special about a TimeBank exchange. We are not simply consumers. We are actively providing a way of enabling and empowering another person to know that they matter, to know that they can make a difference in the life of another.
There is a universal need to feel that one’s life has meaning. Simple consumption does not do that. But receiving help from another in a TimeBank exchange represents the creation of meaning, of purpose, jointly shared. One is giving new life to a movement. When a transaction becomes a relationship and the relationship becomes a web of connectivity and the web of connectivity renews an entire ecosystem for our species, a simple act is more than a simple act. It supplies the molecular structure of purpose – and ultimately, that is what spirituality means.
