Reflection by Edgar Cahn
In timebanking, you learn something every day. Today I learned what a scoby was – that it is the home for a living Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. That’s called a scoby.
Typically, it looks like a blob, dense, round, rubbery, and opaque. When put in tea, the scoby creates kombucha, a fermented tea with nutrients, probiotics, and antioxidants that can kill harmful bacteria. For thousands of years, kombucha, made with a scoby, has been used to improve health and digestion, reduce inflammation, improve cholesterol levels, melt belly fat, and help with blood sugar control. It does so by stimulating the cells to produce acids and enzymes that bring the body into balance. Kombucha has now become fashionable; you see it for sale everywhere in health food stores and supermarkets.
Think of the TimeBank as an organizational scoby that produces a kind of social fermentation. And that timebank form of kombucha is rich with probiotics like empathy, empowerment, and a passion for justice. The good news is you don’t have to buy a scoby to make kombucha. You can just combine the ingredients and let them ferment. There are do-it-yourself guides on the internet to create a scoby. And there are do-it-yourself instructions to create a timebank scoby. Use them.
